How to Measure Your Body

When taking your body measurements, be sure to use a flexible measuring tape for maximum accuracy. Measure yourself in front of a mirror to make sure the tape is positioned correctly and level to the floor.

If possible, have someone else measure you. When taking measurements, breath normally and stand straight with your muscles relaxed and feet together. Preferably, measure on bare skin (not over clothes).

BUST

Place one end of the measuring tape at the fullest part of your bust and wrap it around going under your armpits and shoulder blades back to the front. Keep the tape snug but not too tight. TIP: To get the most accurate measurements, wear the type of bra you intend to wear with the garment(s) you plan on sewing or purchasing (padded or non-padded).

WAIST

Wrap the tape measure around your natural waistline, this is the point where your belly naturally creases as you bend to the side. TIP: Be sure not to suck in your stomach while taking your measurements.

HIPS

Stand straight with your feet together and measure across the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, this is typically about 8" - 10" below your natural waist. TIP: Use a mirror to make sure the measuring tape is level with the floor.

SLEEVES

Again, you might want to ask a friend to help you with this. Place the tape measure at the tip of your shoulder draping it on the side of the arm and at the elbow continuing down to where you would like the hem of the sleeve to end. Be sure to slightly bend your arm while measuring, this will ensure you have freedom of movement when you bend your arms. TIP: If you don't have someone that can help you with this measurement, you can use 2-sided tape on the tip of your shoulder to hold the tape measure in place.

HIGH SHOULDER POINT (HSP) TO LENGTH

Measure down from the point where your neck and shoulder line meet (see photo above). Be sure to measure straight down, over your bust. Use a mirror to make sure you are standing up straight.

NECK AT CENTER FRONT TO LENGTH

Measure down from the middle of your breastbone (see photo above). Be sure to measure straight down, over your bra/bust. Use a mirror to make sure you are standing up straight.
